Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

You must complete the FAFSA to apply for financial aid at most schools. You may submit it anytime after January 1 for the next school year. Keep in mind that each state may have different deadlines for FAFSA or additional applications for state aid.

  • The fastest way to complete the FAFSA is online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. You and your parents must apply for PIN numbers that become your electronic signatures. To obtain a PIN go to www.pin.ed.gov.

  • If you prefer a paper copy of the FAFSA, they are available through high school counselors, public libraries or college financial aid offices.

  • Make sure to include each college's federal code on your FAFSA to ensure the financial aid office receives a copy of the results. Most college websites list their code.

  • You will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) Information Acknowledgement after filing your FAFSA. Visit the web link provided in your SAR to review your answers, add additional colleges and note if you are chosen for verification.

  • Verification is required for about 30 percent of applicants. If selected, you and your parents must provide your college with the most recent federal income tax returns and complete a Verification Worksheet.
